“Discipline is choosing between what you want NOW and what you want MOST.”
I often hear clients say, “I don’t have discipline,” or, “I need better discipline.” But if you really take a moment to pause and think about what that would mean, it boils down to the quote above. Which is more important to you? Is it the 6-pack, the athletic performance, the healthy body fat % (or whatever else your goal might be)? Or is it the chocolate, the cocktail, the beer, the pizza, or the fries?
To achieve success and reach your goals, we often have to sacrifice immediate desires (goodbye, ice cream) in favor of long-term goals (hello, 6-pack). Now, by no means, does this mean you have to choose in favor of your goal over your immediate desire all the time, but it does mean you have to choose it much more often than not. Instead of thinking of it as deprivation or restriction, try thinking of it as a strategy or an investment. By putting in the effort now it will pay off later. Which means…
